I know your type. You're the kind who's looking for a game to distract yourself with on those long car rides to Grandma's house.
Well knock it off, you've got your hands full with driving.
But for anyone you might have in the passenger seat, Denki Blocks could be just the ticket.
Not to mention it's cheaper than the tickets you normally get while driving. Seriously, you need to shape up.
Aesthetics:
But enough of that hog wash, let's talk Denki Blocks. Let's talk bright, colorful graphics. Cardboard cut-out characters are just too cute to handle, and for once, lighting isn't a problem.
If you've got to match the red blocks, you won't have trouble distinguishing them from the green blocks. Not this time.
Control:
And that's what it's about. You'll be sliding colored blocks all over the place. When one moves, they all move, and when blocks of the same color touch, they join together. Match up all the colors and you're a freakin' puzzle maniac!
Gameplay:
And so Denki Blocks takes that idea and throws more than 200 scenarios your way. They get progressively harder, and there's bound to be a handful that you'll swear are impossible to solve.
But what's great about Denki Blocks is you don't have to solve each puzzle to advance. The puzzles are grouped in sets of 25, and you only need to clear 15 of them to advance.
It's a cake walk at first, but by the last few sets, you'll be thanking your lucky stars as you skip a ridiculous level instead of breaking your Gameboy into tiny bits out of rage.
Multiplayer:
The only catch with Denki Blocks is that the game is one-player only. Perhaps an option to create your own levels could have opened the door to a little friendly competition, but this mode is no where to be found either.
Sound:
Aurally, the Denki Blocks soundtrack is a throw away. Play it with headphones or mute it and opt for the car radio. Either way, it won't make a difference as the challenging gameplay is what's going to make or break this title.
OVERALL:
Overall, Denki Blocks is a surprisingly simple and original idea, but gets really tough as the levels go on.
Chances are, getting stuck in the same level half a dozen times is going to be what causes you to lose interest, but having the option to get by without completing every puzzle will keep you coming back.
It might not have the longevity of a Tetris or Dr. Mario, but its refreshing originality and progressive challenge are two very rewarding assets.
