Review Radica: Gamester Trap Light
- By Kevlar Gorilla
Welcome to a new generation of gaming. And with every new gaming console, there are new peripherals! To cope with the GBA not being backlit, several companies have tried their collective engineering luck to be the next "best thing since sliced bread". Gamester's trap light is an odd device with an idea that is just what this market needs.
Aesthetics:
The attachment looks shiny. After ripping though the package with all my might, I perused through the instructions and assesed the situation.
The attachment itself looks like a diaper (or even a g-string) made specifically for the GBA. The entire unit snaps on to the back of your Gameboy and stays in place quite snuggly. Colours include indigo, glacier, and white and each shade is very faithful to the actual GBA colours. The battery compartment litters the backspace of the peripheral; it looks like the GBA is wearing a backpack. When (if) you put down the system, you'll see it raised 2cm (darn metric system) of the table because of the battery pack.
The arms hold the lights inplace and give the impression of complete adjustability, but don't be fooled... the arms must stay upright for the maximum amount of lighting coverage. Also, if they were any lower they would interfere with your thumbs, especially when hitting the Start and Select Buttons. It's also important to mention that the battery compartment is sealed with a screw, so changing batteries on the road may be a hassle. To replace the batteries on the system itself, you will have to remove the device.
If you lower the arms, the size of the console grows considerably and only the larger pockets in this world are able to welcome it. The package claims that the arms can be used as bumpers for drop damage, but don't believe everything that you breath as if it protects the system at all, it will surely break.
Lighting Capabilities:
The amount of light the light trap emits is fantabular. Now, it uses two lights based on the sides of the unit. The glare spots hit centered on the side edges and may interfere with your game, depending on what you're playing. Once, I was playing Advance Wars (review here) and had to move a unit to the very edge of the screen. My eyes bugged out for a second trying to focus past the glare, but I wasn't wearing my glasses, so it was my fault.
All the screen is covered with light, except for two small spots at the top and bottom of the screen. It's not so much that their not hit with light then the light's not quite so intense. Everywhere else, though, the light is nicely diffused by the mirror casing the lights are encased in.
Remember, batteries are a must: two AA. Don't use rechargables or half-full ones. If the batteries make the GBA's light turn red, they will be too weak and you will see a noticeable tint of yellow in the light. I would assume the batteries last a fair while; the package claim 15 hours -- What a coincidence!
Features:
-Two LED lights with mirror alcoves
-nice bright light coverage
-holds snugly to the system
-2 AA batteries required
-$10-15ish US
OVERALL:
Pros:
-soild construction and won't move
-lights the screen well
-cheap
Cons:
-Some glare and some faded spots
-kinda bulky
-hastle to replace batteries/remove from system
The Gamester Trap Light from Radica is a decent lighting solution for those cold, dark, lonely nights. It's the best so far. Now... how can I improve on it?
