News   Nintendo's Online Plans
- Posted By Kevlar Gorilla, 05.21.2002

Nintendo has recently announced it's online plans concerning everyone's favourite console, the Gamecube. The both the broadband and 56k modem adapters will be sold at a retail price of $34.95 US. Nintendo has decided to take a "hands off" approach to the first generation of online games by not issuing liscensing fees to use the modem. This allows third-parties to set their fees at whatever they what (if anything at all).

This strategy has it's own pros and cons. The Gamecube is now a very atractive machine to develop for, and those unable to obtain and use broadband aren't left with the short end of the stick. However, some may see this strategy as proof that Nintendo doesn't specificly care if it get's its online portion of the Gamecube running. I must say that this announcement is better than nothing.

"Phantasy Star Online Episodes I & II" (developed by Sega) will be the first available online game for the Nintendo Gamecube. Also, the Sega Sports 2K3 line of video games should be expected to have online capabilities.
