Nintendo: Online

If you thought Nintendo would never get around to going online, you were not alone. The speculation is winding down, though, with this new announcement.
The gist of it is that Nintendo will be releasing its modem adapter in Japan this summer, followed by Japanese/American releases of broadband and the rest of the modem adapters this fall.
Each adapter will have a suggested retail price of $34.99 and the first game to use them, Sega's Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II, will be playable in just over a week at E3.
To benefit the developers, Nintendo will not require royalty fees from revnues of third party online titles. This is unlike the strategy of Nintendo's competitors.
Nintendo has also announced that "several" of its development groups and a "large number" of other companies are working with online ideas, although none of these will be demonstrated at E3.
"Nintendo is known for great gaming and our first priority is to continue that legacy, " said Satoru Iwata, director, corporate planning, Nintendo Co. Ltd. "Game content developed with that sole mission will enhance the joy of video gaming."
In its announcement, Nintendo stressed a focus on innovation and quality to drive the online part of business and make it successful.
According to the press release, "Nintendo's network strategy is built on the philosophy that online will be most successful if the game play is extremely compelling and highly affordable. To match this philosophy, Nintendo's initiative consists of a flexible development program, favorable publisher business model, and support for all consumers whether the player connects by modem or broadband."
