You Need Not Be Hopeless: A Rebuttal

Nintendo doesn't need to throw money at the Gamecube for it to survive. With the current pricing setup. Any money lost with selling a Gamecube is gained directly back if two or more games are purchased. I've currently purchased 5 games, soon to be 6 in November. This Christmas, Nintendo is going to mop up. Next Christmas, you'll see more of the same when Pokemon Ruby and Saphire hit the stores. That means more cash for Nintendo to make some really great stuff.
Online gaming for isn't the paramount for consoles that most would like to hype it up to be. It would be convenient, it would be fun, but no game would sell simply because of it's online features. Some forget Nintendo's policy; if they decide to do something new, they're going to do it right the first time. There's little room for error. If they want to make a really big impact on online gaming, they should (and probably will) make any and all future Mario spinoff games online-compatible.
Also, don't forget the Gameboy. Nintendo knows what it's doing; like selling original Mario games in order from crappiest to most-in-demand (Super Mario 3). With the price cut last February, they've got the handheld market in a headlock. They are the handheld market. Microsoft has already claimed defeat by allowing THQ to publish their games on it. Also, any speculation on making new Gameboy is only speculation. It would be very unwise for Nintendo to release anything considered and upgrade (specs wise) to the current GBA. ...I'd rather not talk about a back-lit model.
Worldwide, Nintendo doesn't have the lowest sales. Recent rulings in Australia justify the use of mod chips with Xboxes, which has set Microsoft on their toes again. Many games that have been hyped as "Xbox only" have been seen to be below average, and are now being ported to all consoles (Wreckless and Hunter: The Reckoning are two that come to mind). Despite Sony's humongoid lead, Nintendo is both surviving and thriving. They're not in trouble at all. 3rd party relations are fine, and there are plenty of really great games coming out in the near future, including Metroid, Zelda, and the curiously obscure "Wario World". The only thing Nintendo has to worry about is if the PS3 is released before 2004 - before Nintendo can plan and release their next console. This would be extremely silly of Sony considering the current PS2 sales, but note that everything is business with them.
The next next-generation console war will truly be a sight to see.
