Editorials   MadCatz Light Grip
- By Dan Doll

By MadCatz, the Gameboy Advance Light Grip does two things. It lights up the GBA, and it makes it easier to hold.

As you can see, the Light Grip features quite an inspired design.

The whole unit slides over the GBA and locks tight into the auxilary port and its accompanying notches, much like Nintendo's GBA/GCN link cable.

In its closed position, the Light Grip will act as a screen cover, keeping dust from collecting during non-use.

For play, the Light Grip features widened grips which, although clunky and unnatural feeling, keep the strain off the index fingers for games that require heavy use of the shoulder buttons.

This device also sports a fancy joystick and raised buttons to further help people with giant, monkey hands (such as yourself). Both the joystick and the buttons are really only aesthetic devices that, when pressed, push down into the corresponding buttons below.

The joystick takes some getting used to, but it's pretty accurate once the Light Grip is securely in place.

The light itself comes from bulbs in both corners of the screen cover. Two lights means extra battery drain, so switching the device off is a good idea if there's another light source.

But for use in the dark, the Light Grip delivers.

The main problem, as with all GBA lights, is glare. The lights are in a fixed position, but the glare comes off the screen if its held at the right angle.

Unfortunately, this particular angle leaves the bottom of the screen in the dark.

The Light Grip will light up the entire GBA, but the user will have to deal with glare at both sides of the screen in exchange.

Once a player gets past the glare and size of the Light Grip, what's left is a comfortable grip, an interesting joystick, and a well-lit screen.

Not too shabby. All that, and the thing has another aux. port to allow for multi-player gaming. Certainly worth the $10 price of admission.

From MadCatz.com:
The Mad Catz Light Grip illuminates your Game Boy Advance screen for brighter, more vivid graphics while the pass through port ensures you won't miss any multi-player action.

Featuring oversized, high performance buttons and a control stick -- this a complete gaming system. The low profile design protects your Game Boy Advance when not in use.

Features:
~ Durable Cover Protects Game Boy Advance Screen
~ Over Screen Light Source for Late Night Gaming
~ Brighter More Vivid Graphics
~ High Performance Joystick and Button Covers
~ Pass Through Port for Multi-Player Gaming
