Editorials   The Pikmin/Smash Bros. Launch Odyssey
- By Dan Doll

Everyone continues to share system launch stories, even if doing so now is a bit untimely.

I however, will not. I will not, and it's a shame because you'd really enjoy the story.

Instead, I will share my story of the launch of Pikmin and Super Smash Bros: Melee.

It began last night when, diehard Nintendo fan that I am, I decided camping out overnight was the best option for me. After all, I planned on getting both games, something that wouldn't be an easy task.

And so I did. I set up camp and slept overnight. Not so much in the cold, though, I just stayed at home in my bed.

Of course, I still knew I would have to get up pretty early. I even set my arlarm clock to wake me up, and it's a good thing I did. I awoke early, as planned - just in time to go to work.

I worked for a decent six hours before finally punching out around 3:00. By then it was almost late afternoon, and surely all the copies of Pikmin and SSB:M would be gone. But without knowing for sure, there was hope, and I still had time to make it to the store. So, I quickly jumped in the car and headed off...

...home. I went home. No reason, really, but home is where I went. And then to my girlfriend's house. I went there next. But after I left there I headed straight out... to school. I had class this evening, too.

But finally, after class was over, at 9:10PM, I went to the Walmart on a whim.

Truthfully, I hadn't planned on getting to a store until the weekend, I've just been trying to appear more dedicated in this editorial.

Anyway, I was at the store and it was time to brave the crowds. With memories of the recent system launches still fresh in my mind, I courageously headed in towards the electronics section.

When I arrived I found the place packed. There had to be as many as one person using a demo kiosk, and the line to the counter had twice that.

I took my place in line and noticed as the woman in front of me, probably meaning to inquire about Pikmin, accidentally asked for the cost of the CD player she was holding.

Nonetheless, after countless seconds in line, it was finally my turn. I asked the cashier, who I had met before but have since forgotten his name, for Pikmin and SSB.

I figured there was almost no chance they would still be in stock, but he managed to find one copy of Super Smash Bros. hidden on top of a row of games. For those interested, that row of games was many, many more copies of Super Smash Bros...

Pikmin was similarly difficult to find, but I walked out of the Walmart with both the games that I wanted. After roughly three or four minutes, my Pikmin/SSB:M launch odyssey came to a close.

How's that for a hardcore gaming story?
